On May 8, 2019, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing with a delegation of permanent under-secretaries of the United Kingdom (UK) led by Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Civil Service and National Security Adviser Mark Sedwill. It is the first visit paid by a joint delegation of permanent under-secretaries from major departments of the UK government.
Wang Yi said that in 2015, the leaders of the two countries agreed to launch the "Golden Era" of China-UK relations during President Xi Jinping's visit to the UK. The joint visit to China this time paid by permanent under-secretaries from major departments of the UK government shows the great importance the UK side attaches to UK-China relations and the positive wish of building the "Golden Era" of bilateral relations. The Chinese side is willing to work with the UK side to strengthen communication and exchanges, enhance political mutual trust and deepen practical cooperation as well as welcomes more active participation of the UK side in the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, so as to translate the joint efforts of building the "Golden Era" into tangible benefits and constantly inject new vitality and impetus into the "Golden Era".
Wang Yi pointed out that with a commitment to peaceful development, China is willing to work with various countries to build a community with a shared future for mankind. China adheres to open development, goes with the trend of economic globalization and continuously deepens reform and opening up. China sticks to balanced development and pushes economic globalization towards greater openness, inclusiveness, and universally benefits within the current international system. It is hoped that the UK side will view China's development positively, constantly advance its cooperation with China, promote the respective development of the two countries and make contributions to world peace, stability and development.
Mark Sedwill said that the UK side attaches great importance to developing its relations with China and stands ready to jointly build the "Golden Era" with the Chinese side. It is expected that both sides will enhance intergovernmental exchanges, boost bilateral cooperation in various fields and jointly cope with global challenges. The UK and China are natural cooperative partners for the Belt and Road Initiative. As a supporter of the Belt and Road Initiative, the UK side has been inspired by President Xi Jinping's speech at the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation not long ago. The UK side is willing to actively participate in the cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative while hoping that the Chinese side can play a more important role in the global economic system. The UK side upholds multilateralism and stands ready to strengthen cooperation with the Chinese side in international and regional affairs.
