On May 22, 2019, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi of Pakistan on the sidelines of the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Bishkek.
Wang Yi expressed that China-Pakistan all-weather strategic cooperative partnership has been further developed in the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative. The two sides should jointly implement consensuses reached between leaders of China and Pakistan during Prime Minister Imran Khan's attendance at the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRF) in China. The two countries should enhance high-level exchanges, deepen practical cooperation, and promote bilateral relations to achieve new development given the complicated and changing international situation.
Wang Yi said that a recent terrorist attack against the Pearl Continental Hotel in the Pakistani port city of Gwadar deserves high alert due to its baneful influence. The Chinese side appreciates the Pakistani side's long-term efforts in combating terrorism. The Chinese side hopes and believes that the Pakistani side will strengthen security and protection for Chinese personnel and institutions in Pakistan and maintain security of China-Pakistan cooperation.
Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that the Pakistani side is willing to, together with the Chinese side, well prepare for high-level exchanges in the next stage and implement the outcomes of the second BRF, so as to deepen bilateral cooperation by strengthening the construction of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor as a central theme and push for new achievements of bilateral relations. The Pakistani side shares the same goal with the Chinese side in combating terrorism and extremism. Both sides empathize with each other and share weal and woe. The Chinese side's concern is the Pakistani side's concern. The Pakistani side will do its best to protect Chinese personnel and institutions in Pakistan, continue to enhance bilateral cooperation in counter-terrorism within bilateral and multilateral frameworks and safeguard the two countries' common interests as well as regional peace and stability.
The two sides also exchanged views on the Afghan issue, and agreed to strengthen communication and coordination, jointly promote the political settlement of the Afghan issue at an early date and preserve regional peace and stability.
