2019-06-23

On June 23, 2019, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister Lejeune Mbella Mbella of Cameroon in Beijing.

Calling Cameroon China's traditional friend and important partner in Africa, Wang Yi said that China and Cameroon have all along understood each other and supported each other. The Chinese side firmly opposes interference from external forces in Cameroon's internal affairs. Both sides should continue to understand and support each other on issues involving each other's core interests and major concerns.

Wang Yi noted that China-Cameroon practical cooperation serves as mutual support and mutual help for each other, and has played an important role in Cameroon's development so far. China's financial support for African countries is based on equality and voluntarism and aims to help Africa improve its capacity for independent and sustainable development. Although financial difficulties occur in some African countries at present, the Chinese side will not only consider its own interests, but properly address the difficulties through friendly consultation to help these African countries overcome difficulties. There is no such thing as a "debt trap" between China and Cameroon or between China and Africa. The Chinese side will not seek any political purpose through this issue.

Lejeune Mbella Mbella expressed that China is Cameroon's reliable strategic cooperative partner. President Paul Biya treats promoting Cameroon-China relations as the priority in Cameroon's diplomacy. Cameroon speaks highly of China's policy toward Africa featuring sincerity, real results, affinity and good faith, thanks the Chinese side for its support for Africa all the time, and extends gratitude to the Chinese side for its understanding and sincere assistance to Cameroon in alleviating the debt problems. The enhanced cooperation between China and Africa under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative has brought new hope to African countries and will continuously benefit the African people.

After the meeting, both sides witnessed the signing of multiple bilateral cooperation agreements together.
